Dr. Sanku Dattamudi

Assistant Professor, Soil Science and Agroecology

Dr. Sanku Dattamudi is an Assistant Professor at Texas A&M University–Kingsville (TAMUK) with expertise in soil science, agronomy, and environmental science. His teaching and research focus on sustainable soil management, agricultural production, and environmental quality, with particular emphasis on air quality issues associated with crop production.

Sanku grew up in West Bengal, India, and earned his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, with a major in Soil Science and Biochemistry, from Visva-Bharati University. He subsequently joined the Department of Soils at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) through the ICAR Junior Research Fellowship program and received his M.S. in Soil Science in 2010. During his master's program, he was invited to work as a visiting scholar at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). After briefly serving as a research fellow at PAU, he moved to the United States to pursue his doctoral studies in Soil Science at Louisiana State University (LSU). He earned his Ph.D. in Soil and Environmental Chemistry in 2016. His doctoral research investigated air-quality challenges associated with agricultural crop production, including greenhouse gas, ammonia, and particulate matter emissions.

Following his Ph.D., Dr. Dattamudi held research positions at Florida International University (FIU) and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL), where he worked on wetland soils, soil management, agroecology, and sustainable agricultural systems. He joined Texas A&M University–Kingsville in 2023.

Dr. Dattamudi has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and presented his research at national and international scientific meetings. As of 2026, he has secured more than $2 million in federal research funding for his research group. He also serves on the editorial boards of three journals in agriculture and environmental sciences. He is an active member of the Soil Science Society of America, American Society of Agronomy, and Crop Science Society of America.
